God tells Samuel, “The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart, ”(I Samuel 16:7)
Jesus, near the end of his ministry was in the Temple with his disciples, and according to Mark 12:38-40, “as he taught he said, ‘Watch out for the teachers of the law. They like to walk around in flowing robes and be greeted with respect in the marketplaces, and have the most important seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets. They devour the widows’ houses and for a show make lengthy prayers. These men will be punished most severely.”
It is easy to forget when reading a passage like this one that the person saying it is both man and God.”
